Free Wordpress theme resources

As a follow-up to my post last week about using free CSS based templates to hack up your own great landing pages for affiliate offers, I got a few pings and emails from guys who prefer to use wordpress.

I’m also a big fan of wordpress as a platform - I’ve personally used it for everything from a blog to a landing page to a mini-ecommerce shop site - its really easy to hack around, and the fact its open source and widely used means there are literally thousands of plugins and themes you can find for nothing. Bargain!

That said, wordpress is a notch up in difficulty for the average non-techie affiliate who just needs a ‘thin’/basic html landing page - it takes a little time and effort to get to know the wordpress theme based system, but because of the large number of users if you have a problem, its easy enough to trace/sort out yourself via the codex and support forums. If you’re planning on running any great volume of traffic to a wordpress site, I’d also highly recommend something like the ‘supercache‘ plugin - that way, your host won’t boot you and your server won’t die.

It’s for sure one of, if not THE most useful platforms you can learn about though, so if you’re not already using it, I’d strongly recommend you download and install a copy on your next project. Aside from its many other benefits, wordpress is also great for SEO and garnering some organic traffic.

If you are going to use wordpress to hack a landing page/site up with, then there’s a great wealth of good quality well-designed themes to give you a head start, which is the point of this post. I’ve listed below a few of the better places (imo anyway) to find free wordpress themes. As usual, you’re going to have to customise something to fit your exact needs, and experiment/test/learn which type of design works best with your traffic and what you’re pushing.

There should be enough choice there to keep you going for a while! So, get downloading and installing, and start customising and testing! As a guide if you’re really not sure where to start when choosing a theme to work with, I would pick something simple - its way easier to customise! As usual, less is more - 1-2 columns is enough, you don’t need anything amazing looking. Choose something that has at least the kinda of layout/basic structure that you’re after, install it and then hack colours etc around as needed.
